Notes on playing safely:

Dogs just love to catch things! But beware. Jumping up with all four feet into

the air and twisting to catch a floating flying disc can be dangerous for

'weekend warriour' dogs, overweight dogs, and larger breeds. The disc dogs

you see on TV and at events are well conditioned professional doggy athletes.

When playing fetch we throw for distance - the aim is cardio exercise.

That means the disc hits the ground before our dog gets to it. No jumping!

Cruciate ligament rupture in dogs:

This is a serious and fairly common injury often caused by dogs jumping up

to catch floating discs, and can require surgery.

When we play catch, we play with our dog standing 5 -15 ft away from us and

we throw to him. Our dog always has at least his 2 back feet on the ground when

he catches the chewber. We play this game combined with tug just about every

night in the livingroom while watching TV.

Regular safe exercise is vital in maintaining your dogs joint and muscular heath....but don't overdo it.
